Pastors David and Selina Walukhu met Kara twenty years ago. This was when the vision for New Promise Homes was birthed! Over the years, Pastors David and Selina stewarded the vision of orphan care by giving to needy children from their own pockets. They never forgot Kara’s vision to build a children’s home. When KOP began, Pastors Ben and Kara reached out to Pastors David and Selina for help.
The Walukhus are such a vital part of our team! They helped secure the land, find the right children to come into our homes, and selected the caregivers for the children. Everything about the daily operation of New Promise Homes goes through them. Their influence and connections in Kenya make it possible for us to carry out the vision.
But more important than their influence, Pastors David and Selina love our children. They have a heart to see orphans find a home and have a chance to build better lives for themselves. Pastors David and Selina’s desire for our children is wholistic—spirit, soul, and body—and discipleship is central in our homes. No one stewards the vision of KOP better than them!
Sarah came to New Promise Homes after living on the streets with her mentally ill mother. Both Sarah’s father and grandparents passed away. Sarah was stuck living on the streets with little food, no education, and no love. Everywhere Sarah went for help, she was driven away. She sat alone in the rain and the heat. This caused Sarah to believe that all people were bad and that she was truly alone. Sarah came to New Promise as an older child, and she cried when she saw the beds and furniture and clothes. Sarah had no shoes and little clothing. She was malnourished and struggled with receiving love.
Even now, Sarah is adapting to life in a family. She is still a bit shy, but Sarah is catching up! She’s beginning to believe that Jesus loves her and that New Promise Home is her family. Every day, she opens up more and more. Sarah told Mama Selina that New Promise Homes is her family. Sarah is happy and thriving. With remedial help in school, the teachers say Sarah is on track and catching up with her peers. Sarah is now learning how to live with brothers and sisters as well as learning how to make friends.
