Why Aren't We Praying the Way Jesus Taught Us? | Pastor Ben Diaz

What if prayer isn't about convincing God to do something, but about partnering with Him to accomplish what He has already provided through His grace?

The Power of Prayer: Partnering with Heaven

Sunday Message | Pastor Ben | November 1, 2026

What if prayer isn't about convincing God to do something, but about partnering with Him to accomplish what He has already provided through His grace?

This Sunday at Vida Church, Pastor Ben challenged us to rethink our understanding of prayer and embrace our responsibility as believers to bring heaven's reality into our everyday lives.

Prayer Begins with Grace

“You cannot obtain through faith something God hasn't already provided by grace.”

Prayer isn't begging God to change His mind. It's coming into agreement with His Word and exercising the authority He has entrusted to us.

James 4:2 reminds us, “Ye have not, because ye ask not.” Sometimes we go without simply because we haven't asked. Other times, as James 4:3 explains, we ask with the wrong motives.

Effective prayer begins with understanding God's heart, His promises, and our identity in Christ.

We Are Ambassadors of Heaven

According to 2 Corinthians 5:20, we are ambassadors for Christ, and Philippians 3:20 reminds us that our citizenship is in heaven.

As ambassadors, we represent heaven's authority here on earth. Prayer is one of the primary ways we participate in God's purposes.

Pastor Ben described prayer as a portal to heaven. Ephesians 2:6 tells us that we have been raised and seated together with Christ in heavenly places. Through prayer, we become conscious of that spiritual reality and learn to operate from our position in Him.

We aren't praying to a distant God. We are communicating with our Father from a place of relationship and union with Christ.

Spiritual Disciplines Are Expressions of Relationship

Freedom in Christ doesn't mean living without discipline. True freedom empowers us to choose habits that strengthen our relationship with God.

Pastor Ben highlighted several essential Christian disciplines:

  • Reading the Word: Becoming familiar with God's voice and His promises.
  • Daily prayer: Developing constant communication with our Father.
  • Meditating on Scripture: Allowing God's truth to shape our thinking.
  • Remembering His faithfulness: Recalling what God has already done.
  • Worshiping: Honoring God with our hearts and lives.
  • Serving: Participating in the body of Christ and finding our place of belonging.
  • Giving: Expressing trust, generosity, and surrender through our finances.

These disciplines aren't religious requirements to earn God's approval. They are intentional choices that help us grow in spiritual maturity.

A Powerful Prayer Life Flows from Surrender

Romans 12:1 calls us to present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God.

Prayer is more than asking God to meet our needs. It is a relationship that involves surrender, obedience, and participation.

We cannot approach our relationship with God only as consumers, constantly asking for blessings without offering our lives in service to Him.

A surrendered life positions us to partner more effectively with His purposes.

Pray with Authority and Perseverance

When we pray in the name of Jesus, we're not simply adding a religious phrase to the end of our prayers.

His name represents His authority.

Jesus has entrusted believers with the privilege of acting in His name, according to His will and His Word.

Pastor Ben also reminded us that praying consistently doesn't mean we lack faith. Some answers manifest instantly, while others require perseverance.

Matthew 7:7–8 encourages us to ask, seek, and knock. Persistent prayer isn't about changing God's willingness. It's about remaining steadfast in faith and continuing to participate in His work.

Standing in the Gap for Others

One of the most powerful expressions of prayer is intercession.

To intercede means to stand in the gap for someone else, carrying their burden before God and praying His promises over their life.

Pastor Ben gave us practical direction for praying for loved ones who don't yet know Jesus.

Pray for laborers. Ask God to send people into their lives who will share the Gospel with them.

Pray against spiritual blindness. Ask that their hearts and minds would be opened to recognize the truth.

Pray for divine appointments. Believe for opportunities where they can encounter God's love and hear His Word.

Be willing to participate. Sometimes we are the very laborers God wants to send into someone else's life.

Our prayers and our willingness to act work together as we partner with heaven.

This Week's Challenge: Start Asking!

Pastor Ben closed with a simple but powerful reminder:

“100% of your unasked prayers won't be answered.”

You don't have to understand everything about prayer before you begin. Start where you are.

Set aside time each day to connect with your Father. Open His Word, discover His promises, and begin praying with confidence.

Choose someone in your life who needs Jesus. Pray for them consistently, ask God to send laborers, and remain available for divine appointments.

You have been given access to the Father, authority through Jesus, and the Holy Spirit to empower you.

Let's be a church that doesn't just talk about prayer, but actively partners with heaven to see God's kingdom manifested on earth!

As believers, we can talk about the goodness of God, quote Scripture, and explain what it means to be born again. But ultimately, the greatest evidence of God’s transforming power is the life of Christ being demonstrated through us.

Remembering is intentional. It’s more than recalling an event. It’s bringing God’s goodness to mind again and again until it begins to renew our thinking. This is the heart of biblical meditation: filling our minds, imaginations, and words with His truth.

What if the very mistake you regret could become part of your greatest testimony of God’s redeeming power? God is a good Redeemer! He doesn’t desire to punish us for our mistakes. His heart is to restore, heal, and redeem. But experiencing that redemption requires something from us: humility and genuine repentance.

The love of God isn't something we have to manufacture or strive to obtain. When the Holy Spirit came to live within us, He brought His nature with Him. His love is already present within us. Our opportunity is to allow that love to become visible in the way we treat people every day. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 14:1 to pursue love. That means intentionally looking for opportunities to let the love of God within us shape our words, attitudes, and actions.
