Why Do My Relationships Feel Shallow and How Can I Strengthen Them? | Pastor Ben Diaz
What makes a relationship truly strong?
Many relationships begin with common interests. We connect over sports, hobbies, food, work, school, or shared experiences. While those things can bring people together, they aren't enough to sustain relationships that thrive for a lifetime.
This Sunday, Pastor Ben reminded us that Kingdom relationships are built differently.
Instead of being held together by circumstances, they are strengthened by the character of Christ. Faith, love, honor, truth, responsibility, and self-control become the sails that move our relationships forward.

Kingdom Relationships: Building Connections That Reflect Christ
What makes a relationship truly strong?
Many relationships begin with common interests. We connect over sports, hobbies, food, work, school, or shared experiences. While those things can bring people together, they aren't enough to sustain relationships that thrive for a lifetime.
This Sunday, Pastor Ben reminded us that Kingdom relationships are built differently.
Instead of being held together by circumstances, they are strengthened by the character of Christ. Faith, love, honor, truth, responsibility, and self-control become the sails that move our relationships forward.
Love Creates Safety
One of the greatest marks of a healthy relationship is safety.
Biblical love says:
"I care about you. I'm committed to staying by your side. You don't have to perform to earn my acceptance."
When God's love fills our hearts, fear begins to lose its grip. As 1 John 4:18 reminds us, "Perfect love casts out fear."
Whether in marriage, friendship, parenting, or church community, healthy love allows people to be known without pretending to be someone they're not.
Pastor Ben also recommended Keep Your Love On, a book Vida uses in premarital counseling and highly recommends for anyone wanting to build healthier relationships.
Honor Sees People Through God's Eyes
Honor isn't simply respect for someone's accomplishments. Honor is choosing to see people the way God sees them.
Instead of defining someone by their mistakes or current struggles, honor calls out their God-given identity and potential.
This changes the atmosphere in our homes, our marriages, our friendships, and our church family.
It's also important to remember that honor can never be demanded. The moment it is expected or forced, it becomes distorted. Genuine honor is freely given by people who are secure in their own identity in Christ.
Jesus modeled this perfectly. Philippians 2 reminds us that although He is Lord of all, He humbled Himself, entered our world as a baby, and chose the path of a servant. Secure identity always produces humble honor.
A Question Worth Asking
Pastor Ben encouraged us to honestly evaluate our closest relationships.
Ask the Lord:
- Where am I growing in love?
- Where could I show greater honor?
- Am I seeing people from God's perspective or through the lens of their weaknesses?
When love and honor become the foundation of our relationships, we create space for people to flourish and for Christ to be seen through us.
Let's continue building Kingdom relationships that reflect the heart of Jesus every day.
