Old Wineskins Can't Hold New Miracles

Why Old Mindsets Can't Hold New Miracles

Pastor Ben Diaz

"For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."
John 1:17

The law was given to reveal our inability to keep it and our desperate need for a Savior. In Matthew 9, Jesus challenged the religious mindset of His time, demonstrating that He was bringing the Kingdom of Heaven to earth. He told His disciples they had to embrace a new way of thinking. He illustrated this truth by saying:

"No one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine is stored in new wineskins so that both are preserved."
Matthew 9:17 NLT

The wineskin represents our mindset—our way of thinking. Jesus turned religious expectations upside down. He touched the unclean and made them pure. He forgave sins to bring healing. He dined with those considered unworthy and called them valuable. He made it clear: He did not come for those who believed they were righteous but for those who knew they were not and recognized their need for a Savior.

Pastor Ben emphasized that just as Jesus brought Heaven to earth through His ministry, we are called to do the same. However, this is impossible unless we experience a transformation in our thinking. Law and grace cannot be mixed. To fully live in the New Covenant, we must let go of old religious mindsets—the old wineskins—and embrace our true identity in Christ. We need a new container to carry the fullness of our New Covenant inheritance. An old mindset cannot hold the supernatural power and miraculous life God intends for His children.

Wherever you resist the truths of God’s grace—whether in healing, prosperity, or the boundless nature of His love—pause and examine your heart. Could an old wineskin be limiting your ability to receive?

This Sunday at Vida, we were challenged with a simple but powerful question: Are we merely Christians who know the Word, or are we actually participating in what we believe?

We can spend so much of our lives looking for the extraordinary that we miss the sacredness of the ordinary. We wait for the next season. The breakthrough. The opportunity. The relationship to change. The circumstances to improve. We imagine that when something finally shifts, then our real life will begin. But God is not only the God of where we're going. He is the God of right here and right now.

We are living in what many have called an epidemic of loneliness. Although we are more connected technologically than ever before, many people still lack deep, meaningful friendships. As the Church, one of our greatest distinguishing marks should be our ability to love one another. Jesus said the world would recognize His disciples by the way they love.

Healthy relationships don't happen by accident. They are built intentionally as we allow God to shape the way we love, encourage, and walk with one another. This week, Pastor Ben continued our Kingdom Relationships series by focusing on two foundational pillars: vision and faith.

Every relationship in our lives isn't meant to carry the same weight. Some are casual, others are seasonal, and a few become deep Kingdom relationships worth intentionally investing in. As Pastor Ben reminded us this Sunday, healthy Kingdom relationships don't happen by accident—they're built on self-control, responsibility, and truth.
